The town was documented for the first time in 1236 under the name "Santi Aini".
The Arab presence and the frequent pirate assaults over time led this area to develop an important network of defense towers, watchtowers and fortifications.
Despite having become an important tourist attraction, Santanyí preserves its indigenous architecture and charm. One or two-floor petite houses and typical materials of the area such as stone, lime plaster and sandstone.

Some of these houses have been converted into small art workshops, restaurants and shops, giving the town joy and color. Its weekly market, patron saint festivals, exhibitions, the Festival de Música de Santanyí and many other cultural events make it a unique and enriching place.
